How It Works

Sparring Chess helps you practice chess your selected openings against a realistic configurable opponent. The sparring plays moves based on real game data from Lichess.

1. Configure a Sparring

Configure your practice opponent based on real game data.

  • Amateur mode: Your opponent plays moves commonly played by Lichess players at your selected rating level and time controls.
  • Master mode: Your opponent plays moves from master-level games in the Lichess database.
  • Date range: Filter to recent games for modern opening theory, or include older games for broader coverage.

2. Choose a line

Choose the line (the starting position) you want to practice.

  • Easy setup: Practice the opening moves after study.
  • Stop never practice what you study

3. My Games (optional)

Import your own games to see how you typically play in each position.

  • Import from Lichess/Chess.com: Analyze your personal games.
  • Track your moves: See which moves you've played most often and compare against the sparring opponent's choices.

4. Repertoire Configuration (optional)

Upload PGN files to build and study your opening repertoire.

  • Track coverage: See which lines you've studied and which positions need more work.
